Adgestone Vineyard
Adgestone Vineyard is at the eastern end of the Isle of Wight. While seemingly in remote countryside with extended views across land and sea, it's easily accessible from Bembridge, Ryde and Seaview.
Ideal as a first vineyard visit
We found the audio tour interesting and engaging and about the right length to explore the vineyard, with stops offered at strategically placed benches. The content was well written and suitable for people with little previous knowledge of vine growing in UK, yet still interesting for those who have been to several vineyards before. The tour extends, if you wish, into the compact winery - just beware lots of steps!
The audio tour, café and pleasant outdoor seating area make this an interesting and pleasant vineyard to visit.
Blue Sparkling Wine at Adgestone Vineyard
As well as a good range of more conventional wines, a blue sparkling wine is produced at Adgestone from grapes grown on site. Something Blue is a unique, lightly bubbling Cuvée; it is the only blue sparkling wine made in the UK.
It is created using the traditional champagne method and rests on its lees for two years before release to increase its complexity of flavour. The Cuvee's natural blue / turquoise colour was inspired by the Isle of Wight's beautiful crystal clear waters and Mediterranean-like warm climate and is considered the perfect accompaniment to a warm summer day, or to brighten up a dull winter evening and is especially popular at weddings, hence the name.
The blue colour is extracted from the skins of black grapes, using a method that is a closely guarded secret. Suffice to say that anything is possible when an eccentric engineer buys a vineyard and decides to let his creative wiles run free.
A Family Business
Under the ownership of Adgestone Wine (Russ Broughton and Philippa Jane) since 2013, the vineyard, winery and branding have all undergone a considerable process of improvement with help from friends and extended family.
