The Best Ways to Keep Your Wine Cool on Hot Summer Days

There is nothing quite like enjoying a chilled glass of wine outside on a warm summer afternoon. The problem is that once the bottle leaves the fridge, it can quickly become warmer than you would like.

Adding ice cubes may seem like the obvious solution, but as the ice melts, it dilutes the wine and changes its flavour. Fortunately, there are several better ways to keep your wine cool without watering it down.

Use Frozen Grapes Instead of Ice Cubes

One of the easiest and most enjoyable alternatives to ice is to use frozen grapes.

Simply wash a bunch of grapes, remove them from the stems and place them in the freezer for several hours. Drop two or three frozen grapes into your glass and they will help keep your wine cool without adding any water.

Frozen grapes work particularly well with white wine, rosรฉ and lighter summer wines. They also make a refreshing fruit snack when you reach the bottom of your glass.

For the best results, try to match the grapes to the style of wine. Green grapes are ideal for white wine, while red or black grapes can be used in rosรฉ or light red wines.

Chill the Bottle Before Serving

Wine will stay cooler for longer if the bottle is properly chilled before it is opened.

Place white wine or rosรฉ in the fridge several hours before serving. Rather than leaving the bottle outside once it has been opened, pour only a small amount into your glass and return the bottle to the fridge.

A smaller serving will remain cool while you enjoy it, and you can always top up your glass with another small pour when you are ready. This is often far better than filling a large glass and allowing the wine to become warm before you finish it.

When keeping the bottle outside, place it in a wine cooler, insulated bag or bucket filled with cold water and ice. The cold water is important because it surrounds more of the bottle than ice alone and helps maintain an even temperature.

Wine in Chiller

Use Reusable Wine Chillers

Reusable wine chilling sticks and stainless-steel wine cubes can be kept in the freezer and used whenever needed.

Unlike ordinary ice cubes, they do not melt or dilute the wine. Some wine chilling sticks are designed to fit directly into the bottle, helping to keep the wine cool as it is poured.

Reusable chilling cubes can also be placed directly into the glass, although frozen grapes provide the added benefit of a refreshing snack at the end.

Keep the Wine Out of Direct Sunlight

Even a properly chilled bottle will warm quickly when left in direct sunlight.

Keep the wine under an umbrella, beneath a table or inside a cooler between servings. It is also better to pour smaller amounts into your glass and top it up regularly rather than filling the glass to the top and allowing the wine to warm.

Can You Chill Red Wine?

Red wine can also become too warm during the summer. When served at high temperatures, the alcohol may become more noticeable and the wine can feel heavier.

A light red wine can benefit from a short spell in the fridge before serving. You can also use frozen red grapes to keep it cool in the glass without diluting it.

The aim is not necessarily to make the wine cold, but to prevent it from becoming unpleasantly warm on a hot day.

A Simple Summer Wine Tip

Frozen grapes are one of the simplest ways to keep your wine cool during hot weather. They do not water down the wine, they look attractive in the glass and they provide a refreshing treat once the wine has been enjoyed.

For the best experience, combine frozen grapes with smaller servings and keep the bottle in the fridge or a suitable wine cooler between pours.

Before your next garden gathering, picnic or barbecue, place a few grapes in the freezer. Your wine and your guests will thank you.
