Grape Harvest Cycles
Grape Harvest Season in South Africa
South Africaโs grape harvest cycle typically begins in late January and continues through to April. The timing depends on the grape variety, vineyard location, and climate conditions. The country’s warm Mediterranean climate, influenced by cooling ocean breezes, allows for a long growing season, which contributes to the quality and complexity of the wines.
Key Grape Varieties in South African Wine Production
South Africa is known for a diverse range of grape varieties, both red and white. The most important include:
- Chenin Blanc โ The countryโs most widely planted white grape, producing styles from crisp and fresh to rich and oaked.
- Sauvignon Blanc โ Often grown in cooler coastal areas, producing bright, tropical, and grassy wines.
- Chardonnay โ Used for both still wines and the sparkling wine “MCC” (Mรฉthode Cap Classique).
- Pinotage โ A uniquely South African red variety, a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, known for bold, smoky, and fruity flavors.
- Cabernet Sauvignon โ Producing powerful, age-worthy wines, often blended with Merlot and other Bordeaux varieties.
- Syrah/Shiraz โ Grown in various styles, from elegant and peppery to rich and full-bodied.
When Will the First Wines Be Ready?
The first wines from the new season, particularly whites and rosรฉs, can be ready as early as May or June. These early-release wines are fresh, vibrant, and designed for immediate consumption. More complex wines, such as barrel-aged reds and premium whites, will take months to years before they are released. Mรฉthode Cap Classique sparkling wines also require extended aging to develop complexity.
South Africa Moves Into Autumn While the UK Vines Bear Fruit
As South Africaโs vineyards transition into autumn (March-May), the vines begin to lose their leaves, entering dormancy to rest before the next growing season. Meanwhile, in the UK, vineyards are just coming to life.
By April-May, UK vines begin to bud, and as summer progresses, the fruit sets and develops. The UKโs cooler climate means a longer growing season, with grapes ripening slowly, leading to high acidity and fresh flavoursโideal for sparkling wine production.
UK Wine Harvest & Production Timing
- Harvest: Typically occurs between September and October, depending on the variety and region.
- First Wines Released: Early-drinking still wines may be released by spring (March-April) of the following year, while sparkling wines (which require extended aging) wonโt be released for at least two to three years.
This creates a continuous cycle of wine production across hemispheresโwhile UK producers prepare their wines in the autumn and winter, South African winemakers are gearing up for the next vintage. This year-round production ensures a steady flow of new wines into global markets.
