Cantina Bravi – A Throw of the Tuscan Dice
Cantina Bravi – A Throw of the Tuscan Dice
Between the vineyards of defiance and the echoes of Orecchiella, a quiet miracle ferments. Another stop on my tour of galloping oenology.
This morning, a sliver of cloud and the glint of sun colluded outside my bedroom window, and there it was again: Cantina Bravi, stubbornly real, sitting a mile away like something half-remembered from a dream โ or a train station glimpsed long ago from the rubber trees of Malaya.
I slid into the GTD, that faithful steed of pragmatic torque, and took the winding descent toward the Serchio โ a river that once held the thrashing joy of George, my Labrador, now consigned to memory and the occasional bark in dreams.
The Gravel Road and Glen Campbell.
The road to Cantina Bravi is not unlike the veins in the hand of an old Tuscan farmer โ gnarled, vital, inevitable. Glen Campbell whispered Gentle on My Mind, and John Denver crooned Rocky Mountain High โ two phantom companions in the passenger seat. Talking Heads joined in somewhere above Corfino, as they often do in landscapes where silence begs for commentary.
The driveway announced itself with that satisfying Italian gravel crunch. No Union Jacks here โ not since Brexit repatriated confusion. A dog greeted me with the insouciance of someone whoโs seen too many visitors. Then, Alessandro emerged โ no English, just the rhythm of working hands and prideful eyes. We shook hands. A quick audit of soul and shoes.
Wine from the Margins.
Cantina Bravi sits in the Garfagnana, 550 metres above sea level, where the Serchio is still a silver thread. The Grazia family has farmed this land for over 200 years โ growing farro, chestnuts, and vegetables with the kind of humility that doesnโt require hashtags.
But now, thereโs wine.
Not from inherited glory, but from a quiet defiance. This isnโt supposed to be wine country. The soil was for sustenance, not export. Yet here they are โ Sangiovese, Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Nero โ their roots probing old skepticism and their grapes whispering: โWhy not here?โ
This stop โ like others on my galloping oenology tour through Europeโs lesser-sung vineyards โ proves again that terroir is as much about people as soil. These wines donโt arrive with swagger. They arrive with history.
Agriturismo, Goose, and Pirlo.
Chickens and a rogue goose muttered near a pond. A woman sewed on the verandah, thread and time woven like vines. The dog nearby bore that particular Tuscan blend of loyalty and indifference.
This is also an agriturismo, one of Tuscanyโs originals โ restored farm buildings now scattered across the hillside like a family that ate too much and decided to nap in the sun. In summer, they offer guided picnics to hidden lakes and hydro basins. Places where silence is part of the hospitality.
The view from the veranda stretched like slow cinema โ Orecchiella, Fortezza Verrucole, and somewhere beyond, the idea of Andrea Pirlo: that rare Italian footballer who understood geometry the way monks understand silence. You can imagine him here as a boy, already reading the angles between cypress trees.
Of All the Cantinasโฆ
Alessandro took me through the cantina โ six gleaming tanks, a future bottled in steel. The air smelled of yeast, ambition, and ancestral risk.
Then came a call from Luca in Camaiore.
โAh, Cantina Bravi,โ he said, โI had my fiftieth there โ surprise party.โ
And suddenly we were in Casablanca again. Of all the cantinas in all the provincesโฆ
But I wasnโt surprised. Coincidence follows me like a goat on a string.
The Mountains Whisper.
I declined the wine โ not out of restraint, but respect. I already knew the taste. Iโve purchased their wines before. Besides, Parco dellโOrecchiella was calling. And Iโve learned not to ignore mountains when they whisper.
This is how galloping oenology works: not a chase, but a dance. You drink. You listen. You move on.
Some places linger
not because of what you drank,
but because of how they asked you to remember.
Cantina Bravi โ one of those.
Orecchiella โ its echo.
๐ข This dispatch from my wandering oenological trail โ next up, perhaps the Jura or the Douro, depending on the mood of the engine. If this piece fermented something in you, pour a glass, leave a comment, or forward it to someone who still believes in the magic of quiet vineyards and dogs who ignore you.
